Dans le calendrier r\u00e9publicain fran\u00e7ais, le 24e<\/sup> jour du mois de niv\u00f4se \u00e9tait d\u00e9nomm\u00e9 jour du cuivre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le cuivre est un \u00e9l\u00e9ment chimique dont le symbole est Cu.
Son nom vient de Chypre (\u039a\u03cd\u03c0\u03c1\u03bf\u03c2, Cupros<\/em> en grec ancien) o\u00f9 des mines \u00e9taient sources de tout un commerce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avec l\u2019or, le cuivre est le premier m\u00e9tal travaill\u00e9 par l\u2019Homme parce qu\u2019on le trouve \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat natif. Il a m\u00eame donn\u00e9 son nom \u00e0 une \u00e9poque pr\u00e9historique, le chalcolithique ou \u00e2ge du cuivre, derni\u00e8re p\u00e9riode du n\u00e9olithique, qui s\u2019\u00e9tend de -2500 \u00e0 – 1800.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il est le seul m\u00e9tal, avec l\u2019or, \u00e0 poss\u00e9der une couleur naturelle : rouge ou orang\u00e9e. Les autres sont soit gris, soit blancs. Quand il s\u2019oxyde, il produit du vert-de-gris, cette patine verte que l\u2019on peut observer sur de nombreuses statues. Ainsi celles des ap\u00f4tres et \u00e9vang\u00e9listes qui ornaient la fl\u00e8che de Notre-Dame et ont \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9pos\u00e9es pour restauration quelques jours avant le terrible incendie de 2019. Elles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 nettoy\u00e9es par microgommage, puis recouvertes de bar\u00e8ge et de cire, ce qui leur donne une teinte brun fonc\u00e9. On peut actuellement les admirer \u00e0 la Cit\u00e9 de l\u2019architecture et du patrimoine :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le cuivre pr\u00e9sente des propri\u00e9t\u00e9s remarquables : il conduit fort bien l\u2019\u00e9lectricit\u00e9 et la chaleur, il est ductile et mall\u00e9able et il montre une certaine r\u00e9sistance \u00e0 la corrosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On utilise aujourd\u2019hui plus de 400 alliages comprenant du cuivre. Le dictionnaire Littr\u00e9 pr\u00e9cise d\u2019ailleurs : \u00ab les anciens chimistes l\u2019appelaient V\u00e9nus, \u00e0 cause de sa tendance \u00e0 s\u2019unir avec les autres m\u00e9taux \u00bb (sic !).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les alliages les plus connus sont le bronze (avec de l\u2019\u00e9tain) et le laiton (avec du zinc). Toutes les grandes civilisations de l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 ont travaill\u00e9 le bronze pour fa\u00e7onner des \u0153uvres d\u2019art, notamment de remarquables sculptures. Les Grecs et les Romains l\u2019appr\u00e9cient m\u00eame plus que le marbre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 la fin du XVIIe<\/sup> si\u00e8cle, Andr\u00e9-Charles Boulle, \u00ab le plus habile \u00e9b\u00e9niste de Paris \u00bb selon Colbert, d\u00e9core ses meubles avec un placage en marqueterie auquel il l\u00e9guera son nom constitu\u00e9 de bois de rapport, de m\u00e9tal (cuivre, \u00e9tain, laiton) et d\u2019\u00e9caille de tortue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charm\u00e9e par les nuances rouges-orang\u00e9es du cuivre et par son aspect brillant, j\u2019ai test\u00e9 la peinture acrylique fine sur des feuilles de ginkgo et je trouve le rendu flamboyant !<\/p>\n\n\n\n
