Dans le calendrier r\u00e9publicain fran\u00e7ais, le 11e<\/sup> jour du mois de pluvi\u00f4se, souvent notre 30 janvier, \u00e9tait d\u00e9nomm\u00e9 jour de l\u2019ell\u00e9bore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Chez nous, et un peu partout, on l\u2019appelle Rose de No\u00ebl. Mais elle ne ressemble pas \u00e0 la rose, pas m\u00eame \u00e0 la petite \u00e9glantine \u00e9mue et rougissante \u00bb : c\u2019est ainsi que Colette ouvre le chapitre de Pour un herbier<\/em> intitul\u00e9 \u00ab Ell\u00e9bore \u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certaines esp\u00e8ces d\u2019hell\u00e9bores, ou ell\u00e9bores, fleurissent en hiver, d\u2019o\u00f9 ce joli surnom de \u00ab roses de No\u00ebl \u00bb. Il s\u2019agit notamment de l\u2019Hell\u00e9bore noir <\/strong>(Helleborus niger<\/em>) et de l\u2019Hell\u00e9bore d\u2019Orient <\/strong>(Helleborus orientalis<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je le constate avec bonheur sur mon petit bout de balcon parisien :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Longtemps on a pr\u00eat\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019hell\u00e9bore la facult\u00e9 de gu\u00e9rir la folie. On trouve trace de cette croyance dans une des fables de La Fontaine les plus connues, \u00ab Le li\u00e8vre et la tortue \u00bb. Le li\u00e8vre se moque ainsi de la tortue qui pr\u00e9tend le vaincre \u00e0 la course :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La beaut\u00e9 de ses fleurs a inspir\u00e9 les artistes, en particulier ceux de l\u2019Art nouveau. Eug\u00e8ne Grasset en illustre ainsi le mois de d\u00e9cembre de son calendrier pour le magasin de confection La Belle Jardini\u00e8re en 1896, tandis qu\u2019Elisabeth Sonrel en accompagne son all\u00e9gorie de l\u2019Hiver en 1901 :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pour terminer cette fl\u00e2nerie sous le signe de l\u2019hell\u00e9bore, les mots sensuels de Colette :
\u00ab Promises, inattendues, pr\u00e9cieuses, prostern\u00e9es mais bien vivantes, les ell\u00e9bores hivernent. Tant que la neige les charge, elles restent ferm\u00e9es, ovo\u00efdes, et sur l\u2019ext\u00e9rieur de chaque p\u00e9tale bomb\u00e9 une trace vaguement ros\u00e9e, semble seule indiquer qu\u2019elles respirent. Le robuste feuillage en \u00e9toile, la raideur des tiges, autant de caract\u00e8res par lesquels toute la plante proclame sa persistance \u00e9mouvante. Cueillie, ses coquillages sensibles desserreront leurs joints \u00e0 la ti\u00e9deur d\u2019une chambre, d\u00e9livrant la houppe des \u00e9tamines jaunes, heureuses de vivre et de diverger\u2026 Ell\u00e9bore ! \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n
