J\u2019ai d\u00e9couvert l\u2019existence de cette plante lorsque j\u2019\u00e9tais adolescente \u00e0 la lecture de Vendredi ou les limbes du Pacifique<\/em> de Michel Tournier. Ce grand conteur et remanieur de mythes en appelle au Cantique des cantiques<\/em> et \u00e0 des croyances m\u00e9di\u00e9vales :<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab \u00ab Les mandragores feront sentir leur parfum \u00bb, promettait la jeune \u00e9pous\u00e9e. \u00c9tait-il possible que Speranza t\u00eent cette promesse biblique ? Il avait entendu raconter merveille de cette solanac\u00e9e qui cro\u00eet au pied des gibets, l\u00e0 o\u00f9 les supplici\u00e9s ont r\u00e9pandu leurs ultimes gouttes de liqueur s\u00e9minale, et qui est en somme le produit du croisement de l’homme et de la terre. Ce jour-l\u00e0, il se pr\u00e9cipita \u00e0 la combe rose et, agenouill\u00e9 devant l’une de ces plantes, il d\u00e9gagea sa racine tr\u00e8s doucement, en creusant tout autour avec ses deux mains. C’\u00e9tait bien cela, ses amours avec Speranza n’\u00e9taient pas demeur\u00e9es st\u00e9riles : la racine charnue et blanche, curieusement bifurqu\u00e9e, figurait indiscutablement le corps d’une petite fille. Il tremblait d’\u00e9motion et de tendresse en repla\u00e7ant la mandragore dans son trou et en ramenant le sable autour de sa tige, comme on borde un enfant dans son lit. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cette l\u00e9gende vient des longues racines de la mandragore, dont les ramifications semblent avoir forme humaine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Les enlumineurs m\u00e9di\u00e9vaux n\u2019h\u00e9sitent d\u2019ailleurs pas \u00e0 repr\u00e9senter un v\u00e9ritable personnage avec des feuilles qui lui sortent de la t\u00eate, comme dans Gart der Gesundheit<\/em>, un herbier de 1485 :<\/p>\n\n\n

On retrouve la mandragore dans le Tacuinum sanitatis<\/em>, ce manuel sur la sant\u00e9 inspir\u00e9 d\u2019un trait\u00e9 m\u00e9dical arabe, ici dans une version du XVe<\/sup> si\u00e8cle qui en montre la r\u00e9colte\u00a0:<\/p>\n\n\n

Le hurlement de la mandragore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019illustration fait droit \u00e0 une autre croyance m\u00e9di\u00e9vale : lorsqu\u2019on l’arrache du sol, la mandragore pousserait un cri si effroyable qu\u2019il pourrait rendre fou et m\u00eame exposer \u00e0 la mort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C\u2019est pourquoi on recommandait de se boucher les oreilles avec de la cire et d’attacher la plante \u00e0 un chien afin que la mal\u00e9diction s’abatte sur lui !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plus proche de nous, la saga Harry Potter fait de la mandragore un rem\u00e8de \u00e0 la p\u00e9trification<\/a>. Quand on la d\u00e9pote, on fait surgir un b\u00e9b\u00e9 frip\u00e9 qui hurle de fa\u00e7on stridente. Ne pas oublier ses prot\u00e8ge-oreilles pour ne pas s\u2019\u00e9vanouir\u00a0!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nul risque de cri meurtrier ni de mal\u00e9diction avec la douceur bleut\u00e9e de ma carte buissonni\u00e8re\u00a0!<\/p>\n\n\n
