Dans la nuit du 30 avril au 1er<\/sup> mai, il convenait de couper et planter le may<\/em>, ce qui signifie rapporter une branche ou un arbuste et le planter sur la place du village, d\u00e9cor\u00e9 de boules rouges ou de guirlandes, comme l\u2019illustre Jean Bourdichon pour le mois de mai des Grandes Heures d\u2019Anne de Bretagne<\/em>\u00a0:<\/p>\n\n\n

On pouvait \u00e9galement le planter devant la porte ou la fen\u00eatre d\u2019une demoiselle, le choix de l\u2019essence adressant un message : le tilleul aux feuilles en forme de c\u0153ur fait office de d\u00e9claration d\u2019amour, le rosier c\u00e9l\u00e8bre la beaut\u00e9 et l\u2019aub\u00e9pine la puret\u00e9 de la jeune fille. En revanche, le sureau, \u00e0 l\u2019odeur d\u00e9plaisante, signale un temp\u00e9rament volage !<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J\u2019ai un Mai long et gros et fort \u00e9galement,
Poussant devers le haut une verdeur plaisante,
Qui frisonne sa cime en tout temps verdoyante
Et qui se peut planter assez facilement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma dame, permettez que l\u2019on m\u2019ouvre la porte,
Et je le planterai sur la petite motte
Qui de votre maison remarque le milieu ;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Je le mettrai tout droit dessous votre crois\u00e9e
O\u00f9 en petits frisons la terre relev\u00e9e
Fait l\u2019endroit plus plaisant qui soit en tout le lieu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il fallait \u00e9galement porter le may<\/em>, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire un \u00e9l\u00e9ment de verdure sur sa tenue, elle-m\u00eame souvent de couleur verte. C\u2019est ce que l\u2019on peut admirer pour le mois de mai du calendrier des Tr\u00e8s Riches Heures<\/em> du duc de Berry o\u00f9 un noble cort\u00e8ge de retour de la for\u00eat voisine se pare de couronnes et colliers de feuilles\u00a0:<\/p>\n\n\n
