Il faut parfois s\u2019approcher tr\u00e8s pr\u00e8s des tableaux pour comprendre \u00e0 quel point rien n\u2019y est laiss\u00e9 au hasard. C\u2019est exactement ce qui se produit devant deux \u0153uvres de Martin Schongauer, actuellement visibles au Louvre<\/a> : La Vierge au buisson de roses<\/em> (1473) et la Nativit\u00e9<\/em> du retable d\u2019Orlier (vers 1475) pr\u00e9sent\u00e9e en diptyque avec un saint Antoine\u00a0:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 leurs pieds, un motif discret mais intrigant appara\u00eet : des fraises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pourquoi des fraises ? Et surtout, pourquoi les r\u00e9p\u00e9ter ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Un d\u00e9tail naturaliste\u2026 en apparence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u00c0 premi\u00e8re vue, ces fraisiers pourraient passer pour une simple repr\u00e9sentation botanique. Schongauer, comme beaucoup d\u2019artistes du XVe si\u00e8cle dans l\u2019espace rh\u00e9nan, observe la nature avec une pr\u00e9cision nouvelle. Feuilles dentel\u00e9es, petits fruits rouges, fleurs blanches : tout est rendu avec une minutie presque scientifique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mais cette fid\u00e9lit\u00e9 au r\u00e9el n\u2019exclut jamais le sens. Au contraire, elle le renforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le fraisier pousse au ras du sol. Il s\u2019\u00e9tend discr\u00e8tement, sans s\u2019\u00e9lever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans la pens\u00e9e symbolique m\u00e9di\u00e9vale, cette caract\u00e9ristique en fait une image id\u00e9ale de l\u2019humilit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plac\u00e9e aux pieds de la Vierge, la plante fonctionne donc comme un commentaire silencieux : Marie est celle qui s\u2019abaisse, celle qui accepte. Ce n\u2019est pas un hasard si ce motif appara\u00eet pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment dans des sc\u00e8nes o\u00f9 sa pr\u00e9sence est centrale et m\u00e9ditative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le rouge des fruits : une Passion d\u00e9j\u00e0 annonc\u00e9e<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Mais le d\u00e9tail le plus frappant demeure la couleur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans La Vierge au buisson de roses<\/em>, le regard est attir\u00e9 vers une constellation de rouges : la robe et le manteau de Marie, les roses et pivoines, les chardonnerets, le rouge-gorge et le pinson\u2026 et ces quelques fraises diss\u00e9min\u00e9es dans l\u2019herbe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alors que les fleurs blanches (rose, muguet, fraise) \u00e9voquent la puret\u00e9 de la Vierge, ce rouge est une anticipation. Il renvoie au sang du Christ, \u00e0 sa Passion future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

M\u00eame dans une sc\u00e8ne de douceur, le destin tragique est d\u00e9j\u00e0 inscrit jusque dans les \u00e9l\u00e9ments les plus humbles. Sous un pan du manteau de la Vierge affleure d\u00e9j\u00e0 le destin sacrificiel de l\u2019Enfant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019hortus conclusus<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Les fraisiers ne sont pas isol\u00e9s : ils appartiennent \u00e0 un ensemble v\u00e9g\u00e9tal tr\u00e8s structur\u00e9. Le jardin dans lequel se tient la Vierge renvoie \u00e0 une image bien connue au Moyen \u00c2ge : celle du jardin clos, symbole de puret\u00e9 et d\u2019\u00e9lection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans ce contexte, les fraises peuvent aussi rappeler le paradis. Fruit agr\u00e9able, doux, presque parfait dans sa forme, la fraise participe d\u2019une vision id\u00e9alis\u00e9e de la nature r\u00e9concili\u00e9e.
Tout se joue alors entre la violence annonc\u00e9e de la Passion et la douceur du salut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ce motif n\u2019est pas propre \u00e0 Schongauer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il s\u2019inscrit en r\u00e9alit\u00e9 dans une tradition visuelle bien attest\u00e9e dans l\u2019Europe du Nord \u00e0 la fin du Moyen \u00c2ge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019exemple le plus embl\u00e9matique est sans doute La Madone aux fraisiers<\/em> r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par un peintre anonyme vers 1420 et attribu\u00e9e au Ma\u00eetre du Jardin de Paradis de Francfort :<\/p>\n\n\n

On y trouve d\u00e9j\u00e0 les roses rouges et les chardonnerets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Des fraisiers y tapissent une terrasse et offrent une vision foisonnante du jardin marial. En ce jour de la fraise dans le calendrier r\u00e9publicain, j\u2019ai moi aussi sem\u00e9 mes cartes buissonni\u00e8res de fleurs blanches et de fruits rouges\u00a0!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
