Bien que l\u2019\u0153uvre soit post\u00e9rieure \u00e0 la grande p\u00e9riode cubiste, Picasso continue d\u2019y exploiter certaines des libert\u00e9s conquises par le cubisme, notamment la fragmentation des formes et l\u2019abandon d\u2019une repr\u00e9sentation strictement naturaliste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette \u00e9criture plastique retarde la reconnaissance des objets. L\u2019artichaut lui-m\u00eame n\u2019est pas imm\u00e9diatement identifiable. Sans le titre, il pourrait passer pour un simple assemblage de formes parmi d\u2019autres. Le mot choisi par Picasso agit alors comme une cl\u00e9 de lecture : il guide le regard et permet de discerner le l\u00e9gume au sein de cet enchev\u00eatrement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Une fois cette \u00e9nigme r\u00e9solue, un autre aspect du tableau s\u2019impose : sa dimension presque royale. Assise dans un vaste fauteuil aux proportions monumentales, la femme occupe l\u2019espace avec une autorit\u00e9 remarquable. La femme tient un artichaut avec une gravit\u00e9 qui rappelle celle d\u2019un sceptre ou d\u2019un insigne de pouvoir. Tous les codes de la majest\u00e9 semblent r\u00e9unis, mais l\u2019embl\u00e8me royal est remplac\u00e9 par un humble l\u00e9gume. De cette substitution na\u00eet une ironie discr\u00e8te et savoureuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cette ironie demeure toutefois bienveillante. Picasso ne ridiculise pas son mod\u00e8le. Au contraire, il lui conf\u00e8re une pr\u00e9sence impressionnante, presque hi\u00e9ratique. L\u2019artichaut ne d\u00e9truit pas la dignit\u00e9 du personnage ; il la nuance d\u2019humour. La figure appara\u00eet \u00e0 la fois noble et famili\u00e8re, imposante et fantaisiste, comme suspendue entre l\u2019hommage et la satire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">C\u2019est sans doute l\u00e0 que r\u00e9side le charme singulier de cette \u0153uvre. En d\u00e9tournant les conventions du portrait officiel, Picasso transforme un objet ordinaire en attribut de souverainet\u00e9 et fait na\u00eetre, \u00e0 partir d\u2019un simple artichaut, une image \u00e0 la fois majestueuse, \u00e9nigmatique et amusante.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019artichaut n\u2019est pourtant pas qu\u2019un ressort comique. Sa forme complexe et presque architecturale en fait un motif plastique particuli\u00e8rement s\u00e9duisant pour Picasso. Si le l\u00e9gume \u00e9l\u00e8ve ironiquement la femme au rang de souveraine, la femme, en retour, \u00e9l\u00e8ve l\u2019artichaut au rang d\u2019objet d\u2019art.
